World’s biggest coffee producing countries

Brazil

Brazil is well-known for producing coffee and its good geo position just adds to it. It is by far the leading producer of coffee in the world with over 50 million bags. In 2022, the yield of coffee in Brazil amounted to approximately 27.4 bags (of 60 kilograms) per hectare, up from 26.4 bags per hectare in the preceding year. It is estimated that by the end of 2022, production will exceed 60 million bags per year! Coffee is one of Brazil’s biggest exports, and the Arabica variety makes up most of the exported beans, up to 70%.

Vietnam

These days Vietnam is the second largest producer of coffee in the world. Although Vietnamese people still prefer tea over coffee, Robusta beans have found their way to being the most produced variety in Vietnam, making up to an enormous 95% out of all coffee produced! Roast coffee was the largest revenue source in the coffee market in Vietnam in 2021, accounting for around 5 billion USD .

Colombia

Colombia has a long history of producing coffee and is responsible for producing some of the finest Arabica beans in the world. They are often used to make high-end specialty blends and are quite profitable for growers. At the beginning of 2022, Colombia exported more than 1 million bags, each weighing 60kg.

Indonesia

Indonesian first coffee plantations were established in Java back in the 1600s, which made this country the first coffee producing nation outside of Arabia and Africa. Today, Indonesia is in the top 10 countries that produce the finest Arabica and Robusta beans. The beginning of 2022 started well for Indonesia, as they exported around 640 000 bags of coffee.

Honduras

Coffee was introduced to this country by Spanish settlers in the late 1700s, and that is when the cultivation of the beans began. At the very beginning of growing coffee, farmers faced difficulties until they found beans that could endure specific conditions. Despite the difficulties in the past, coffee becomes Honduras’ main agricultural export, and the export volume in 2022 reaches 506 000 bags .

Peru

Coffee production in Peru has been on the rise over the last several years, increasing by about a third within this decade. Although it was way behind the countries like Brazil and Colombia when it comes to the revenue generated from coffee exports, in 2022 it positioned the 5th place for the export volume. Through the implementation of the National Action Plan, it is expected that exports will increase by 120%.

India

Coffee came to India in the 1600s, but it was slowly developing until the 18th century when the British increased commercial coffee plantations in India. Although India has a long history of cultivating Arabica beans, now there are around 210 000 coffee producers who grow the finest Arabica and Robusta beans.

Uganda

This East African country is becoming increasingly competitive in the global coffee market, and coffee is the top export there. Precious coffee beans became a stable source of income for many people. In 2022, export volumes reached 402 000 60-kilo-bags. Uganda grows mainly Robusta, and in fact, it is the largest exporter of the finest Robusta beans in Africa. Coffee is produced widely from the west, east and southeast, and the harvest season is typically from November to February.

Mexico

Mexico is also a part of the top 10 countries that produce coffee. That is mainly due to the efforts of small-scale farmers who rely heavily on this source of income. The coffee industry is very important to this country, and coffee is a staple for Mexicans, as they in fact consume more than they export. However, in 2022 Mexico exported 240 000 bags , and it is expected to increase in the upcoming years.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia is thought to be the original home of Arabica coffee. The story goes back to 850 AD, when coffee was initially discovered by a goat. The legend says that the goat was energized by these special beans, which made the goat herder follow the goat and discover the beans that would later be turned into coffee by accident. Today, coffee has become one of the top exports in Ethiopia, and it is also cherished by locals not only for income but also for a rich culture. At the very beginning of 2022, Ethiopia exported 220 000 bags of coffee, and approximately around 4 million bags are exported annually.
